Summer University of Slovak Language and Culture

The Summer University of Slovak Language and Culture will take place under the auspices of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic Mr. Lukáš Parízek.

  • foreign applicants who are interested in studying Slovak language, history, and culture, compatriots living abroad, descendants of Slovaks living abroad, friends of Slovakia and Slovaks, Slovakists and students of Slavic studies, university workers and students of Slovakistics and Slavic studies at foreign universities, teachers of Slovak language at foreign schools of all types, and foreign workers at various institutions and cultural institutions

Organization of tuition

Within tuition of Slovak language we offer:

 

Course of Slovak Language and Culture
Course of Slovak Language and Culture for Compatriots

  • intensive course of Slovak language for all language levels 
  • lectures of Slovak language, literature, ethnology, history, culture and Slovak realia (designated for participants according to their language level) 
  • Slovak PLUS: phonetic and language exercises (A1–A2), conversation and language exercises (B1–B2), seminar on literature and Slovak-Czech comparison (C1–C2)

Course of Slovak Language and Specialized Subjects for Compatriots — High School Graduates 

  • professional presentations and seminars focused on the development of mathematical thinking, logic and reasoning and the acquisition and development of computer skills     
  • language seminars focused on the development of reading literacy necessary to complete a test of general study prerequisites at Slovak universities

 

Methodology innovation during the course:

experience based learning together with practice and practical application of knowledge with the focus on one´s own creation and project tasks, situational language teaching, methods of acquisition, superlearning

Time allocation:

Participants are divided into groups based on results of the entrance examination which will be written on the first day. Study group is made of 10–15 students. The course takes place from Monday to Friday and consists of 4 lessons of general language in the morning and 2 lessons of specialized language (Slovak PLUS) in the afternoon (1 lesson/45 min).

One lesson lasts 45 minutes (approx. 28 lessons/week). A student will attend the total number of 100 lessons including extracurricular activities during the course. 

Extracurricular activities

Programme of extracurricular activities:

 

  • workshops (folk dance, drama, literary interpretation of a text, singing, creative writing, photography, and movie)
  • Bratislava city tour, visit of surrounding places
  • boat trip to the Devín castle and other trips to the surroundings of Bratislava
  • presentation of Slovak art (movies, performances of art groups, visit of exhibitions, concerts etc.)
  • The Cultural Summer and Castle Festival Bratislava
  • sport activities on the Magio beach by the Danube river
  • all-day excursions in factories and scientific centres
  • meetings with Slovak writers, artists and other significant people of Slovak art, culture, and sport
  • closing ceremony and presentation of participants’ outcomes 

Regional excursion

Three-day trip through Slovak regions (cultural and historical sights — towns, castles, museums, caves, and other interesting places).

The number of attendants is limited.

Excursion fee will be paid from the scholarship budget provided by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak republic; hereinafter as “MESRaS SR”.

Instructions for applying to SU 2017 for applicants interested in the scholarship from the MESRaS SR

The applicant has to choose the relevant study programme he/she is interested in at www.eduabroad.sk/kalendar-udalosti/ — educational programme Course of Slovak Language and Culture for Compatriots or Course of Slovak Language and Specialized Subjects for Compatriots High School Graduates. Fill in the online application form and send it. Each applicant needs a recommendation of relevant Slovak Compatriot Society to be sent via email to the Study department of LAP CCE CU.

Conditions for admission:

  • recommendation of relevant Slovak Compatriot Society
  • follow the age limit

Send the motivation letter via email to: lenka.gasovacdv.uniba.sk or plekancovacdv.uniba.sk. Application form without motivation letter will not be registered.

Scan the recommendation of relevant Slovak Compatriot Society and send it via email to the Study department of LAP CCE CU. (lenka.gasova@cdv.uniba.sk, plekancova@cdv.uniba.sk). Should there be more than one applicant from a particular Slovak Compatriot Society the recommendation may cover more applicants in one letter. Applicants must bring the hardcopy of original recommendation to the Summer University in July 2017.

Completed applications will be reviewed by the Committee of LAP CCE CU. Selected applicants to SU — scholarship holders — will be informed about admission to SU 2017 via email as well as via the Slovak Compatriot Society.
